For my own health I have decided I want to lose 80 lbs this year. There. I said it out loud. Sort of. In order to do this I joined Weight Watchers. I have used Weight Watchers before but only briefly. There was a family crisis, I went off track and never got back on. I'm going to be better this time.
I went to the grocery store and got healthy snacks. Quakes, Rice Cakes (great with hummus and peanut butter), pop chips (SUPER YUM), salad stuff, frozen "diet" entrees for work lunches, you know, "healthy" stuff. It cost me a fortune. What's up with that? Thank goodness the lettuce was on sale.
I'm sure there's a better way to do this and am open to suggestions.
What are you doing for your health?
I never do well when it comes to counting things--calories, points, whatever. I also do better on protein-rich diets. Last spring, someone suggested I try the Dukan diet which is what Kate Middleton and her mum went on before the royal wedding. I got the book from the library, read it, decided I could do this, and bought the book for myself. Between mid-April and Thanksgiving, I lost 30 pounds. I have at least 20 more to go. I went off the regimen over the holidays, moving into the maintenance phase and didn't gain much back despite eating bread, pie and many cookies! I started back on it the first with the attack phase (proteins only for a week) and I'm back to "walking" on the gazelle each morning. I'll get there sooner or later. So will you! We'll encourage each other. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteYeah, my mom gets all those Eat Healthy, Fight Cancer, Live Longer books and they all recommend food that's not prepackaged and is free range etc. but who's got $500 to spend on a grocery order and 20 hours a day to prepare a 'from scratch' meal every night ?!? Sorry, but I just can't afford (and lack the motivation) to eat healthy. Thankfully, my metabolism has always been nice to me. If I wanted a perfect body I could due to loose 5lbs or maybe a little more (I'm not good with counting things either - don't even know how much I weigh) but I'm not a healthy eater at all. I really SHOULD try to cut out some of the crap, my body isn't getting younger and one day my metabolism is gonna get peeved at me for all the abuse.
ReplyDeleteBTW - I'm pretty good at eating my protein first and sidedishes second, if I have room. I also eat slow, which helps me feel full faster so I eat less and I also graze all day long instead of eating three huge meals. I've been told those things help. Overall, I don't have any 'plans' but maybe I will reconsider ...
PS: how was your holiday, haven't heard from you in awhile?
Popcorn is a great low-calorie snack that is filling and inexpensive. Good luck on your weight loss journey. I was down 30 pounds before I got sick, but I've put most of it back on. :-( I'll be cheering for you! Oh, nuts are another good snack, but they are on the more expensive side.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, Erika - healthy food is expensive! Good luck with the weight loss - my friend is on Weight Watchers and loves it! It's the only way she can stay committed and accountable.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to drink lots of water - and a cup of green tea in the afternoon can sometimes curb the appetite.
Congrats Silver! 30 lbs is great. I think it's great when someone finds something that works for them. Unfortunately, I'm a carb-aholic. Pasta, rice, bread...I wouldn't last on a protein diet, but I am thrilled that you found something that works for you.
ReplyDeleteCongrats again on the loss, that's fabulous.
Ban, I wish I had a metabolism that was kind. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI've heard that grazing all day is a good idea, unfortunately one of my jobs is not employee friendly so that is not an option. I also know that eating slower works. I try, but usually by the time I clock out for lunch I am BEYOND hungry and it doesn't work out that way. I usually pay for it later. ;)
I need to count. I have no idea of what a portion size should be and have no will power, so I need something to tell me exactly what to do.
Hi Karen,
ReplyDeletepopcorn. Hmmm, I like popcorn. A lot. Thanks for the reminder.
Hi Janet. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who thinks so. It's just crazy.
ReplyDeleteI like Weight Watchers. Like I said, I've used it before, but I think there's a reason that it's been around for so long. It must work. It certainly worked for me the last time I used it. The goal this time is to stick with it.
Tell your friend I said congrats on the weight loss, it's never easy.
Awesome news, Erika!
ReplyDeleteI lost 37 pounds since last June and I'm within 8 pounds of my goal. I know you don't routinely read my blog, but I've been talking about exercise and my weight loss journey on my Weighty Wednesday blog. So far, I've inspired my sister, numerous writer friends, and many of my daughter's teachers to join me.
Good luck and if you need any help, I'm just an email away!
just linked this article on my facebook account. it’s a very interesting article for all
